Platysma Neck Bands

Vertical 'stringy' bands that run from the jaw to the neck are caused by the platysma, a thin sheet of muscle that tightens with age. Treating these bands with botulinum toxin type A (a prescription-only medicine) relaxes the muscle and can soften the appearance of the bands for a smoother, more relaxed neckline. It's a non-surgical option assessed on an individual basis. Your suitability is assessed in full at consultation before any treatment is arranged.

What it treats

Areas this treatment can help with

  • Vertical neck bands caused by platysma muscle activity
  • A tightened or 'stringy' appearance of the neck
  • Clients seeking a non-surgical neck-area option
  • Band softening as part of a coordinated lower-face and neck plan
How it works

The treatment in plain terms

Small doses are placed along the visible bands of the platysma muscle. As the muscle relaxes, the bands soften and the neck appears smoother. The effect is temporary, typically lasting around three to four months, after which muscle activity gradually returns and treatment can be repeated. It addresses muscle-related bands rather than loose skin or fat, which may need a different approach.

Understanding the treatment

The Science Behind Platysma Neck Band Treatment

The platysma is a thin, sheet-like muscle that covers the front and sides of the neck, running from the jawline down to the collarbone. Over time — and particularly with age — the edges of the platysma can separate and tighten, producing the vertical, 'stringy' bands that become visible on the neck. As the muscle loses its youthful support, these bands stand out more when you talk, clench your jaw or move your neck. Botulinum toxin type A is a prescription-only medicine that temporarily reduces the nerve signals telling the platysma to contract. With the muscle gently relaxed along the visible bands, the tension falls and the bands soften — giving a smoother, more rested neckline. Because the treatment targets muscle activity, it doesn't tighten loose skin or reduce fat, so where skin laxity or excess fullness is the main concern, a different approach may be more appropriate. The effect is gradual and temporary, typically lasting around three to four months, after which muscle activity gradually returns and the treatment can be repeated.

Your treatment journey

From consultation to review

1

Consultation & assessment

Your clinician examines your neck, checks whether the bands are muscle-related, and confirms the treatment is suitable. Where loose skin or fat is the main concern, a different option may be advised.

2

Tailored treatment

Small, precisely placed doses are placed along the visible platysma bands using a fine needle. The appointment is quick, usually well tolerated and completed with no downtime.

3

Gradual improvement

Over the following one to two weeks the bands soften and the neck appears smoother as the muscle relaxes. You may notice a more rested, less tight-looking neckline as the effect builds.

4

Review & repeat

A review is arranged to assess your response and symmetry. Repeat treatment is typically planned every three to four months as the effect gradually fades.

Preparation & aftercare

Getting ready & looking after your treatment

Platysma band treatment is straightforward, but a little preparation helps it go smoothly. We'll talk through your neck concerns, skin condition and goals at your consultation, and only arrange treatment if it's right for you.

  • Tell us if your main concern is loose skin or fullness under the chin — a different treatment may be more appropriate
  • Share details of any medicines and supplements, particularly biotin
  • Let us know about any neuromuscular conditions or facial/neck weakness
  • Mention any previous neck or jawline treatment, including filler or skin procedures
  • On the day, arrive as normal — no fasting is needed
  • After treatment, avoid touching or rubbing the treated area for the rest of the day
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, lying flat and hot baths or saunas for a few hours afterwards
  • Keep your review appointment so we can assess your response and symmetry

Is this treatment suitable for me?

Platysma band treatment is suitable for adults whose neck bands are caused by muscle activity. It isn't suitable where the concern is loose skin or excess fat rather than muscle, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions. Suitability is confirmed at consultation, and treatment is only offered when clinically appropriate.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

No — this treatment relaxes the muscle bands, it doesn't tighten loose skin or reduce fat. If your main concern is loose skin or fullness under the chin, a different treatment may be more appropriate, which we'll discuss at consultation.
